You’ve probably heard the saying, “where there’s a blame, there’s a claim.” If you’re wondering where the statement came from or what it alludes to then we’re here to explain and de-myth! Essentially, it alludes to compensation culture, along with other sayings like “Crash for Cash!”

Compensation culture or ‘compo culture’ is a term used to describe people who make a significant number of claims for compensation. Usually, the claims are considered unjustified and fraudulent. In a lot of cases, negative press surrounding fraudulent claims has contributed to the negative social perception.

As a result, this is becoming the term now for any claim a person may have to make. Those who make personal injury claims are put into this group of people and can be viewed as people who are trying to get something for nothing. This couldn’t be further from the truth!

Reform

Reform within the law has been introduced to tackle those making false claims. This is hoped to reduce the prices of insurance premiums, especially for cars, since whiplash claims make up the biggest percentage of all personal injury claims at around 75%. To put it into perspective, this is twice the European average!

However, this may put people off making real claims, resulting in them suffering financially. For some people who desperately need help, making a claim is their only option.

How compensation works

There is a reason that many personal injury solicitors promote their services as “Have you been in an accident that wasn’t your fault?”! Because if it was your fault, the legal system will find this out and you won’t be entitled to any compensation.

The legal system is designed to ensure that if you’ve been injured due to someone else’s negligence, then you will have a fair amount of compensation awarded to you.
